Why Does Silver Turn Black?
Before cleaning, it helps to understand the enemy. Pure silver does not tarnish easily, but 925 sterling silver contains 7.5% copper alloys to give it strength. These alloys react instantly with sulfur in the air, humidity, and the natural oils on your skin, creating a dark chemical layer called silver sulfide.
Tarnishing is a completely natural process and does not mean your silver is fake or impure. It just needs a quick reset.
Method 1: The Gentle Soap Bath (Safe for All Jewellery)
This is the safest method for everyday 925 silver, pieces studded with American Diamonds (AD), and 18k gold-plated silver (gold vermeil).
- The Mix: In a small glass bowl, mix one cup of lukewarm water with two drops of mild, unscented dish soap. (Avoid harsh lemon-scented or antibacterial soaps, as the chemicals can strip gold plating).
- The Soak: Drop your silver chains, rings, and studs into the bowl and let them sit for 5 to 10 minutes to loosen body oils and sweat.
- The Scrub: Use a brand-new, ultra-soft baby toothbrush to gently brush around the prongs and stone settings where dirt gets trapped.
- The Rinse: Rinse thoroughly under clean running water and pat completely dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth.
Method 2: The Baking Soda & Foil Trick (For Heavy Tarnish)
If your silver coins or plain 925 silver chains have turned completely black after sitting in a locker all year, they need a chemical reaction to reverse the tarnish. Note: Do not use this method on gold-plated jewellery, oxidized silver, or pieces with glued-in stones.
- The Setup: Line the bottom of a glass or ceramic baking dish with a sheet of aluminum foil (shiny side facing up).
- The Reaction: Place your heavily tarnished silver coins and plain chains directly on the foil. Sprinkle two tablespoons of baking soda over them.
- The Magic: Carefully pour boiling water over the silver until it is fully submerged. You will hear a fizzing sound and might smell a faint sulfur (rotten egg) odor. This is the silver sulfide transferring from your jewellery onto the aluminum foil.
- The Finish: After 3 to 5 minutes, use tongs to remove the silver. Rinse under cold water and buff dry with a soft cloth. Your silver will look factory-new.
The One Cleaning Hack You Must Never Use
Never use toothpaste to clean your jewellery.
This is the most common household myth in India. Commercial toothpastes are packed with microscopic abrasives (like baking soda and silica) designed to scrub enamel. While toothpaste will remove the black tarnish, it will simultaneously carve millions of microscopic scratches into your 925 silver, permanently dulling its finish. Worse, it will completely strip the gold layer off your 18k gold-plated pieces in seconds.
How to Prevent Tarnish After the Puja
Once Lakshmi Puja is over, how you store your silver determines how long it stays clean.
- Never store your silver in traditional velvet boxes, as velvet traps humidity.
- Ensure the jewellery is completely dry, then store each piece individually in an airtight plastic ziplock pouch.
- Drop a small packet of silica gel into your jewellery drawer to absorb any lingering monsoon moisture.
